What "Proprietary Blend" Really Means on Your Dog's Calming Chew Label

Pick up almost any calming chew and read the ingredient panel. There's a decent chance you'll see two words that quietly tell you almost nothing: "proprietary blend."

It sounds official. Scientific, even. In reality, it's one of the easiest ways for a supplement brand to look transparent while telling you as little as possible.

What a proprietary blend actually is

A proprietary blend lists a group of ingredients together under one total weight, without telling you how much of each one is in there.

So a label might say:

"Calming Blend, 400 mg: Chamomile, Valerian, L-Theanine, Passion Flower."

Looks impressive. But here's what it doesn't tell you: of that 400 mg, how much is actual chamomile? How much valerian? It could be 380 mg of cheap filler and a sprinkle of everything else, and the label would look exactly the same.

Why brands hide behind it

Proprietary blends are perfectly legal, and companies will tell you they use them to "protect their formula." Sometimes that's genuinely true. More often, in the calming-chew world, it comes down to one thing:

• It hides under-dosing. Full, effective amounts of quality botanicals cost real money. A blend lets a brand include just enough of an ingredient to legally name it on the label, a trick the industry actually calls "fairy dusting", while keeping costs (and effectiveness) low.

If a chew "did nothing" for your dog, an under-dosed proprietary blend is one of the most common reasons why.

How to read a label in five seconds

You don't need a nutrition degree. Just look for one thing: a specific milligram amount next to each active ingredient.

• Green flag: "Valerian Root 75 mg · Chamomile 75 mg · L-Theanine 30 mg", every ingredient, its own number.
• Red flag: "Proprietary Calming Blend 400 mg", one number for the whole group.

When the amounts are printed individually, you can actually judge whether there's enough of anything to matter. When they're buried in a blend, you're not judging. You're trusting. And hoping.

Transparency isn't a feature. It's the whole point.

A brand that's proud of its doses shows them. A brand that isn't, hides them. It really is that simple.

So the next time a calming chew won't tell you exactly what's in each bite, ask the obvious question: if the doses were impressive, wouldn't they just print them?
